Staying in a Villa near Cancon, South West France
If you are staying in family villas in South West France with Kingfisher Holidays, the medieval town of Cancon (22 miles from Agen and 9 miles from Villeneuve-sur-Lot), is steeped in history. It’s regarded as the capital of the Agen prune and the hazelnut centre of France and fortunately, there will be plenty of opportunity to sample these fantastic regional delights in one of the many fine restaurants in the area.
The History of Cancon
The fortified town of Cancon, population 1,350, is full of charm and occupies a strategic position on the hill from which it gets its name. In the 11th century a huge castle with as many as 24 towers was built on the top of the hill, giving soldiers panoramic views of the Roman road from Agen to Perigueux, so they could closely monitor who was coming and going. In 1255, the population of Cancon grew further as a small town was built surrounding the castle. However, the fortifications were destroyed before the French Revolution and now the ancient ruins of the castle walls are the only reminder of the site’s magnificent history.
