Each of Kingfisher’s South France cottages are available with a pool and pretty gardens or terraces to relax and unwind in; some even have tennis courts and/or table tennis tables to while away the time. But while it’s fun to recharge your batteries when you have all the comforts on your doorstep, the Lot Valley offers some fantastic places to explore. To really mingle with the locals, it is worthwhile joining in the celebrations at one of the region’s annual events. And, to whet your appetite for next year’s Lot Valley self-catering holidays, here are some of the festival highlights of summer 2017:

Bastille Day – July 14th is a French public holiday where celebrations take place up and down the country. Once again, the town of Villeneuve-Sur-Lot, which is just 13 miles from Agen, marked the occasion with an annual spectacular firework display set against the backdrop of the River Lot. Spectators, young and old, were mesmerised by the magnificent colourful display set to music. Another highlight of the day was Big Jump, a European wide event to promote clean waterways. This year’s Big Jump featured jumps off the bridge at the nearby riverside village of St Sylvestre.

The Night Markets – If you are renting South France cottages, the atmospheric night markets are not to be missed. They have become increasingly popular with residents and tourists alike and prove to be an imaginative way for businesses to advertise and market their produce. Night markets are a fantastic way to get to know the real France and enjoy an evening of entertainment while sampling delicious local food and wine. The night markets often attract superb musicians who play a wide variety of music and encourage their audience of all ages to dance the night away. Night markets can be found in villages all over the region, throughout the summer.

Sound and Light Show – Valence D’Agen’s amazing sound and light show ‘Au Fil de l’Eau’, which can be translated as ‘over water’ celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. For two weeks in August, 400 local performers host a dazzling, colourful outdoor production that attracts an audience from all over France and beyond. This impressive show follows the story of three boys on a lifetime adventure and highlights historical events of their time. It is performed on both sides of the canal and has been described as a ‘truly mesmerising experience.’ Tickets must be booked in advance, just visit the show’s website to find out more.

Shakespeare Performances – The critically acclaimed London theatre company Antic Disposition performed Shakespeare in the Lot Valley this summer against the backdrop of some of region’s prettiest areas. Open air shows of Twelfth Night were performed in nine towns and villages, in English. It included shows in the beautiful bastide village of Lauzerte, the 13th century bastide town of Monflanquin, and the Mediaeval former port town of Puy L’Eveque. The plays, which took place towards the end of July and beginning of August, were extremely popular and were well received by the audience.

The Grand Prune Show – If you are renting South France cottages next year, one of the not-to-be-missed events is Agen’s Grand Pruneau Show, which takes place annually in the last weekend of August. This year it attracted more than 10,000 people to an incredible concert, which featured talented local singer Stephan Rizon, last year’s winner of the French version of TV reality show The Voice. In addition to the concert, there are also plays and market stalls centred round the theme of ‘the prunes of Agen’, which the area is famous for.

Free Concerts – Other highlights in the area this summer included the free Wednesday evening concerts on the stage over the river at Villeneuve- Sur-Lot, which attracted hundreds of music-lovers.
