About Pujols

Pujols, formally known as Pujols-le-Haut, is a fortified hilltop town, not far from the village of Monflanquin and it offers panoramic views overlooking the lot Valley. A prime tourist destination, the village is much as it was since medieval times. Signs of its fascinating past are still very much in evidence and the village’s half-timbered houses, old well, two fortified gates – the Port de Anglais, the ‘English Gateway’ and the Bell Tower Gateway – and remains of the ancient walls offer countless photo opportunities. There’s also an interesting fact about the ancient well – it used to be double the size but was made smaller to allow traffic to pass.

If you are renting holiday villas near Pujols and enjoy facts and history, the good news is that you will have plenty of chance to explore its past. An ideal starting point is the guided tour of the village, which lasts 75 minutes. Here, you will find out about how Pujols came to be one of the most significant strategic places in France in the late 1200s, when the town was owned by the Count of Toulouse. At the time of publication (2014) the tour costs 3.50 Euros per person to join, although prices may vary.

Other places of interest are the two churches: Saint Nicholas and Sainte Foy. The church of Saint Nicholas was built in the 16th century and was originally named ‘Notre Dame et Saint Pierre. The church of Sainte Foye has its origins in the late 15th and early 16th centuries and the church frescos can still be seen. For art lovers among you, it is worth a mention that there are also regular exhibitions in the church.

A holiday in France would not be complete without a spot of shopping, and if you like to stock up on delicious local produce to take back to your holiday accommodation, Pujols has an indoor market that is worth a browse. The market takes place every Sunday morning, and there is a Wednesday evening market at the height of the tourist season, from May to September. However, if you prefer to eat out, there are some fantastic restaurants in Pujols to try out during your stay.

If you like to explore the surrounding area, there are plenty of attractions just a short drive away. A 25 mile drive from Pujols is the town of Bergerac where you can find the National Tobacco Museum. The town was a hub for tobacco growing and the museum enjoys a fantastic location in a turreted building. Here you can find out how tobacco was discovered and the connections with Bergerac.

Also, not far from Pujols is the town of Villeneuve-Sur-Lot, which is well worth a visit, if only to enjoy some shopping! It’s only a ten minute drive away and here you can hire boats or canoes or listen to a free concert by the riverside, which takes place every Wednesday evening in summer.
