Puy l’Eveque has a population of just over 2,000, but has miles of gorgeous countryside for you to explore. The town is built to accommodate tourists, and if your French is not up to scratch, many of the locals speak at least basic English. Tourists flock here each year for its laid back atmosphere and attractive views, with nearly a fifth of the residences being holiday homes.

About Puy l’Eveque

This pretty town is surrounded by undulating hills covered in forests, where you can enjoy picturesque walkways and biking paths. The local tourist office sells maps with walking itineraries for the region, which are perfect for active families to explore. Just outside of Puy l’Eveque there are some fantastic old buildings and bastide towns, which are beautifully preserved and maintained.

Puy l’Eveque is well known for its vineyards, with more than three quarters of the agricultural land under vine. Vast quantities of wine are produced annually, from more than 300 wineries in the regional area. To celebrate their love of local wines they hold the Fete de la Riviere et du Vignoble every two years, with the next one to be held in 2016. During the festival they also hold a fishing competition which is open to anyone who wishes to take part.

Attractions in and around Puy l’Eveque

This small town is known for its ancient castles and ruins which are open to the public, such as the Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe, a chapel built in 962. Puy l’Eveque is also only a short distance from the nearby Perigord, where you can visit the huge caves full of stalagmites, stalactites and Palaeolithic art.

Cahors, the capital of the Lot area, is a medieval city full of narrow alleys and old buildings, as well as a delightful old bridge and many small churches. Tourists are able to fish in the river and in small reservoirs here. Also found in Cahors are the remains of an oval Roman amphitheatre which were revealed when the underground car park was excavated at the Place Gambetta. The stone walls can be seen in the first level of the car park, below the statue of Leon Gambetta.

The riverside in Puy l’Eveque is well worth visiting, and if you cross the modern bridge and follow the steps down to the end of the bridge, you can get the very best view of Puy l’Eveque. This is also where the most famous pictures of the town are taken to show the beauty of the commune in all its glory.

Near to Puy l’Eveque is the Valley of Cele, which is exquisitely beautiful and can be navigated by canoe in both spring and autumn.

Figeac is a small and pretty town where you can visit the museum dedicated to Champollion – the first modern person to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics – for an educational day out with the family.

Food in Puy l’Eveque is of a very high standard, and La Recreation is one of the best restaurants in the area, located just outside of the town in the commune of Les Arques. Here they serve all the food stylishly, with a relaxed atmosphere and artistic presentation of the meals.

Just over an hour away is the village of St. Cirq La Popie, which was voted the most picturesque in France. This small village is perched high on a cliff, over 100 metres above the river, which makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area, playing host to more than 400,000 visitors a year.
