A Spotlight on Monflanquin: A Fantastic Holiday Destination
If you are looking to rent holiday cottages in South France, the unspoiled bastide town of Monflanquin is a wonderful holiday destination. Thousands of tourists and locals alike descend here for the annual medieval festival in August, which brings history to life. However, whatever the time of year, if you are renting a family villa in the Lot Valley, it is well worth making a detour to Monflanquin as it is considered one of the most beautiful bastide towns in France.
The town is perched on a hilltop where you can enjoy scenic views of the surrounding area. Here, visitors can take a trip back in time down the narrow, winding streets to see the ancient stone and half-timber houses, which offer plenty of stunning photo opportunities. However, by far the biggest draw is the town square, called Place des Arcades, which is surrounded by immaculately preserved stone arches.
Place des Arcades is simply steeped in history. Not to be missed is the House of the Black Prince, where the exceptional military victor, Edward the Black Prince (also known as the Prince of Aquitaine), stayed during the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453). He was the only Prince of Wales never to become king and his name is thought to have originated from the fact that he wore black armour.
As well as immersing yourself in the local history, renting holiday cottages in South France gives you the chance to enjoy fantastic cuisine and buy fresh produce from the local markets. Whether you are holidaying as a couple or as a family, and love the flavours of French food, there are some excellent restaurants near the main square. This includes the Black Prince restaurant, ‘La Bistro du Prince Noir’, which has had many good reviews for its superb cuisine and great service. There’s also a weekly farmer’s market on Thursday mornings, which has been held in the town square since the 13th century. After browsing the stalls, if you want to treat the children, just head to the wooden toy shop where they can find a keepsake to remind them of their stay.
If you are renting a cottage in Monflanquin, the village has plenty of attractions. There’s the pretty 15th century hillside church, called the Church of St Andrew, or, if museums are more your style, the Musée Des Bastides is a fun, interactive museum which you can find at the Tourist Office. And, if you enjoy festivals, there are a host of celebrations from Bastille Day on July 14, to the music festival in June and, of course, the highlight of the year, the Medieval Fête.

Step Back in Time at the Monflanquin Medieval Fête
If you are visiting the Lot-et-Garonne in August, a must-see is the medieval festival, organised by the tourist office. Here, you can enjoy the sights and sounds of ancient France as the whole village dresses up in costume for the occasion – and you might find a few animals wandering the streets!
You can get into the spirit of years gone by and enjoy medieval arts, crafts, parades and entertainment at first hand. Children and adults alike will love the medieval camps and street performances that include juggling, fire eating and jousting. Make sure you don’t eat before you go, as you will find plenty of stalls selling delicious food and drink – and there’s also a medieval banquet.
If you would like to tie in your stay with the festival, just contact the local tourist information centre in advance of your booking to discover the date of this year’s event.
