Farmhouses in Castelnau Montratier, South West France
If you are spending your holidays in South West France this summer, Kingfisher has a variety of traditional farmhouses to rent near the village of Castelnau Montratier, which is just a 30 minute drive from Cahors.
Castelnau Montratier is a charming, yet peaceful holiday destination which enjoys a strategic position on the top of a hill, giving you panoramic views across open countryside. The village itself has a long history that can be traced right back to the Middle Ages. The village was rebuilt after it was razed to the ground during a crusade in the 13th century. And the following centuries were equally turbulent.
However, the village survived the destruction of the Hundred Years War (from 1337 to 1453) and various religious wars of the 17th century. It came out stronger than ever and was known as a prosperous village, a thriving centre of the wool trade. Castelnau Montratier was a hub of commerce and agriculture, and various shops, craft industries, and buildings sprang up. This period of wealth lasted until the end of the 19th century when the population decreased with the decline of the wool trade.
Fast forward to modern times and this picturesque village, population 2,000, remains centred around the large, ancient pretty square flanked by arcades. And, if you are renting farmhouses near Castelnau Montratier you can wander the narrow streets and admire the old buildings, explore the local shops, and enjoy the bustling market.
