Some 400 years ago the village wasn’t always so tranquil; it was once the headquarters of a mighty baron which accounts for the village’s strategic hilltop position overlooking the surrounding countryside. Indeed, it still has a castle, although this isn’t the imposing turreted fortress you would expect – it looks more like a manor house. It is privately owned, but is still a tourist attraction as it is possible to organise a part tour of the property through the village tourist office.

If you are renting villas in Beauville, head to the square where you can admire the stunning stone arcaded buildings or visit the 16th century Church of St Jacques, with its 13th century tower and stunning renaissance door. There are two further churches in the area, including Marcoux Church, which is five minutes from the village and dates from the 12th century, and the church of Pau.

Museum of Traditional Crafts and Rural Life, Saint-Maurin – Open every day except Tuesday, this museum can be found next to the town hall in the village of Saint-Maurin – a 17 minute drive from Beauville – and spotlights the village’s agricultural past. You can combine a visit to the museum with exploring the ruins of an 11th century abbey by the village square, and again guided tours are held every day except Tuesday. The village itself is extremely picturesque and has an interesting and turbulent history centred around the abbey.

Eco-Museum, Tournon d’Agenais – This free museum focuses on the farming activities based around prunes that the region is so famous for. You would need to call in advance to book as the museum is closed outside of peak holiday times but you can combine it with a visit to the town.

Z’Animoland Animal Theme Park, Croix Blanche – This is roughly about a 20 minute drive from Beauville and makes a fantastic family outing. You can see more than 100 animals, including exotic species such as camel and buffalo and there is a children’s outdoor play area including a bouncy castle, tree climbing and karting.

In addition to this, if you like action and adventure, you will find plenty of sporting opportunities in and around Beauville including country walks, horse riding, cycling, tennis courts, fishing and canoeing on the river. Beauville has something for everyone!
