Canel is located in the south west of France, south of the Dordogne. An area known for its fantastic food and purple wine, gently rolling countryside and historical towns. Canel was built in the 16th century as a fortified farmhouse in the small hamlet of Thezac. It is just 4km from the medieval Bastide town of Tournon d'Agenais which can be seen from the terraces.

Canel is a large stone farmhouse with a central courtyard enclosed by 2 wings and an end wall. The end wall contains an arched gateway that is the main entrance to the courtyard and the house. The building sits on the highest point of a 60 acre estate, surrounded by woodlands, farmland and vineyards.
Canel was originally classified as a chateau because it has two towers on the northern side of the main house. However, a tax on chateaux introduced over 100 years ago led to the removal of the top floor of both towers. This removed the chateau classification and therefore reduced tax payments.

The 2 wings were originally used for farming activities until the end of the last century including stabling for the horses, prune drying, making and storing wine and baking bread. The area used for making wine has now been converted into a 2 bedroom cottage - Gite le Tonneau, and the old stables have been converted into a single bedroom cottage - Gite l'Ecurie.

Gite Le Tonneau
Le Tonneau is situated in the area of the east wing that used to house a large concrete wine making vat (Tonneau). The accommodation has a sitting/dining room with open plan kitchen. The kitchen has a microwave oven and in the sitting room there is a TV, DVD, CD and radio. WC.
Upstairs, Bedroom (1) has a double bed and bedroom (2) has 2 x single beds. There is a shower room with washbasin, shower and WC.

Gite l'Ecurie
L'Ecurie is situated in the old stables of the east wing. The accommodation has a sitting/dining room with open plan kitchen. The kitchen has a microwave oven and in the sitting room there is a TV, DVD, CD and radio.
Upstairs, the bedroom has a double bed. There is a shower room with washbasin, shower and WC.

Bed linen is included , towels can be hired. Extras can also be hired, cot and highchair, washing, Wi-Fi Internet Access.

You have the choice of lounging around the large gardens and swimming pool at Canel or taking an adventure to one of the local lakes. For example it takes only 15 minutes to go to the lake in Montaigu de Quercy. This big lake has a large sandy beach, water slide, diving platform, pedalos, and play-area. It also has a bar-restaurant where you can buy cool refreshing ice-creams and drinks, filling French sandwiches and complete 3-course meals. Lifeguards safeguard the area and first-aid facilities are available. Quieter lakes can also be found if you are prepared to venture a bit further.
Around Canel there are many wine producers whose vines are just outside the Cahors AOC but produce wine that is just as good. This area is called Thezac-Perricard and due to lack of AOC classification the wine commands a lower price - good news for us all. We have one such producer just before you reach Canel, 'vin du tsar', and another if you go just past Canel, 'domain Lancement', both within walking distance.

Thézac is about 1 hour south of Bergerac airport, 2 hours from Bordeaux and 1 hour 45 mins from Toulouse airport. Hire cars are available in all airports.
